1.6 million garment steamers pose a burn hazard! CPSC expands recall

It is learned that recently, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of Empower Brands' Black+Decker hanging irons due to the risk of burns.

It is understood that the product was recalled for repair in November 2022, and the recall has been expanded to all Black+Decker HGS011 simple hanging irons. The Black+Decker name is located on the bottom of the machine. The product is about 11 inches high and 6 inches wide, including a handle. The model number is printed on the bottom and the side of the color packaging, and the UPC code is printed on the side, back and bottom of the color packaging.

Between 2021 and February 2024, approximately 1.6 million units of the product were sold in stores such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and online at prices ranging from $14 to $23.

The CPSC said that the garment steamer may spray hot water during use, posing a burn hazard to consumers. Since the recall in November 2022, Empower Brands has received 317 reports of steamers discharging hot water, including 82 reports of burns, 7 of which were second-degree burns. In addition, 94 accident reports involved recalled repaired products and new models with updated designs, resulting in 19 burn accidents.

The CPSC said that consumers should immediately stop using the recalled garment steamers, and all relevant consumers (including consumers who repaired products in the November 2022 recall) should contact Empower Brands for a full refund.
