How popular will social shopping be in the United States in 2023? The latest survey data is out!

It is learned that according to data from Sprout Social, a social media marketing management tool, in 2022, the vast majority (98%) of American consumers purchased an item from a social platform or content influencer.

Sprout Social’s survey also showed that by 2023, U.S. consumers have a relatively high intention to participate in a variety of cutting-edge shopping technologies, including:

  • 49% of consumers plan to watch live streaming in 2023

  • 25% of consumers intend to use voice search in 2023, a 3% increase from 2022

  • More consumers and marketers will engage with retailers through augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) or extended reality (XR) technologies such as the metaverse

  • 43% of consumers agree that VR/AR/XR will play a major role in how they engage with brands in the next 12 months, while 48% of marketers expect to use VR/AR/XR technologies by 2023

Other findings from the study include:

  • Nearly half (47%) of consumers say they plan to use shopping features within social platforms, such as Instagram Shops, Facebook Shops or TikTok Shopping. This preference is most common among those aged 25-40 (65%) and least common among those aged 57-75 (23%).

  • More than six in ten (63%) consumers are concerned about the disclosure of their private data (data they voluntarily provide) when shopping online.

  • More than half (55%) of consumers say they are OK with brands using their personal information to provide relevant content and offers.

  • 77% of consumers are more likely to increase spending with brands they feel connected to.

Millennials love social media shopping

Additionally, a survey from CouponFollow shows that nearly eight in ten (78%) millennial consumers follow brands on social media (up from 57% in 2017). Of these, 28% say their shopping habits are influenced by Facebook, 27% by Instagram, and 12% by TikTok.
