Chewy will open more automated logistics centers next year to control labor costs!

It is learned that according to foreign media reports, US pet e-commerce giant Chewy will open more automated logistics centers in 2023 to withstand rising labor costs and improve efficiency.

On January 3, Chewy Chief Financial Officer Mario Marte told The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that the company will open at least two more such centers in the next 15 months and adopt automated storage, retrieval and sorting systems in the centers to reduce the time workers spend tracking and packaging products.

"Automation, which reduces costs, improves safety and increases capacity, is at the heart of the evolution of Chewy's logistics network," added Mario Marte.

The online pet supplies retailer now has three such centers, one in Pennsylvania, one in Missouri and one in Nevada. In some cases, Chewy has completely eliminated the manual crating work that was previously done by workers.

The report said opening automated fulfillment centers represents "a compelling next step for retailers," especially for large retailers like Chewy and Amazon.

Last month, Amazon unveiled its warehouse robot, “Sparrow,” the retail giant’s first robotic arm that can “detect, pick up, and process individual items” on its own.

In October, Walmart announced the acquisition of Alert Innovation, a developer of optimized robotic process automation technology, to expand the technology for Walmart’s regional distribution centers and MFC operations, as well as plans to create a “next-generation MFC.”

It is learned that online retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and Chewy are struggling with automation construction. They hope to reach more customers and provide quality services through innovation and automation, while promoting the sustainable development of the company and reducing human errors and tedious manual labor.
