According to reports, Twitter suffered a large-scale outage on December 28, which prevented tens of thousands of users around the world from accessing the popular social media platform or using Twitter's main functions for several hours. This was the first website crash since Musk took over Twitter. Downdetector, a website that tracks outages through a range of sources including user reports, showed that at the peak of the outage, there were more than 10,000 affected users in the United States, about 2,500 in Japan and about 2,500 in the United Kingdom. Most of the outage reports came from users who said they were experiencing technical problems when accessing the social network Twitter through a web browser. According to the site, by Wednesday evening, reports of Twitter outages had dropped dramatically, with some users later commenting that the service had returned to normal. Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the social network's status page shows all systems are operating. Musk tweeted late Wednesday that "there have been significant changes to the backend server architecture and Twitter should be experiencing some slowdowns," but his post did not mention the outages reported by users. During the outage, some users said they were unable to log into their Twitter accounts through desktop or laptop computers. A small number of users said the issue also affected mobile apps and features including notifications. Others took to Twitter to share updates and memes about the service outage, with #TwitterDown becoming a hashtag on the social media site. Some attempts to log into Twitter from the desktop prompted an error message: "Something went wrong, but don't worry — it's not your fault. Let's try again." Musk said on Twitter that he could still use the service. "Works for me," Musk posted in response to a user who asked if Twitter was down. Hundreds of Twitter employees are estimated to have left the social media company in November, including engineers tasked with fixing bugs and preventing service outages. Thousands of Twitter users were also affected by global access outages in February and July before Musk took over.
