It is learned that according to the latest research by NRF, as the new crown epidemic is no longer the biggest obstacle, Halloween celebrations in the United States this year will return to pre-epidemic levels, and total spending is expected to reach an all-time high.
NRF data shows that this year, 69% of American consumers plan to celebrate the holiday, and total spending is expected to reach a record $10.6 billion, as consumers plan to spend more than ever on costumes, candy and decorations. Among them, young people will be the most active group in celebrating Halloween.
Young Americans rekindle interest in Halloween
While consumers of all ages plan to participate in Halloween celebrations more this year than last, 18- to 24-year-olds will increase their Halloween celebrations more than any other group.
Before the pandemic, young people, especially those aged 18-24, were among those most likely to celebrate Halloween. However, in the past two years, many in this age group have decided not to participate in the holiday as the pandemic has impacted activities such as Halloween parties, bar crawls or haunted houses.
Now, as pandemic restrictions ease, students return to campus and social activities increase, young people are participating in Halloween activities such as dressing up, visiting haunted houses, and hosting or attending parties more than any other time. Halloween costume spending is set to reach its highest level in the past five years.
Halloween consumer behavior insights
The study pointed out that the American Generation Z group mainly gets Halloween shopping inspiration through social media, and they are more likely to use TikTok and Pinterest as a source of inspiration for Halloween costumes than other consumer groups.
In addition to social media, young Americans are also more likely than other age groups to get clothing inspiration from friends and family, or from retail or clothing stores.
The study showed that Halloween specialty stores and costume shops are the main outlets for 18 to 24-year-olds to buy spooky and scary items for Halloween. They are also more likely to shop at these types of stores than other age groups.
Of course, consumers in this age group are also more likely to seek out multiple shopping channels, and they are also the group most likely to buy Halloween-related items online.
