It is learned that according to Bloomberg, Amazon is developing an independent station service to compete with Shopify. Insiders say Amazon is developing a product similar to Shopify, whose tools will allow sellers to set up independent online stores.
After learning the news, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke said that Shopify is ready for the competition and he believes Amazon is a worthy opponent.
Shopify has grown tremendously throughout the pandemic, reaching a valuation of $178 billion. Its payment processing, inventory management and other tools power a large number of small sellers as well as large brands like Chipotle, Allbirds and Staples.
In some ways, though, Shopify is also moving in the direction of Amazon, and the company is quietly testing a new search feature in its Store app that will allow buyers to browse items from many merchants at once. Shopify insiders told Insider that the feature could make Shopify more like Amazon, potentially making sellers uneasy.
Shopify also recently launched Gift Shop, which allows users to purchase gifts in Shop and send them to recipients via SMS, email or social media.
