Smart home sales in the United States are growing strongly! What are consumers' purchasing motivations?

According to NPD data, sales of smart home products increased by 21% in the first 11 months of this year compared with the same period last year. Security cameras accounted for the largest part of sales revenue, while smart power and smart lighting devices were also becoming increasingly popular.

 

Security camera sales continued to be strong, with revenue sales up 13% year over year, but sales of smart power and smart lighting also grew, each up 41%.

 

According to NPD’s weekly retail tracking service, sales of smart power devices have increased 18% and sales of smart lighting devices have increased 21% so far during the holiday season (October 3 to December 11, 2021). During the week of Cyber ​​Monday, sales of smart power and lighting increased 25% and 27%, respectively.

 

According to NPD's ConnectedIntelligence's latest Home Automation Ownership and Usage Report, 40% of consumers who purchased smart power devices listed "convenience" as the main reason for purchase, up 4 percentage points from July 2021. For smart lighting, 16% said "energy savings" was the main motivation for purchase.

 

NPD notes that while security will always be a key feature in the smart home space, new purchasing motivations will help expand the base of smart home buyers and lead to growth in adoption and the number of smart devices in homes.
