How do online shoppers in the U.S.

According to the Digital 2023 study compiled by We Are Social and Meltwater, it is worth noting that of the 339.1 million people living in the United States, at least 311.3 million are active Internet users, which is 91.8% of the North American country's population. 246 million are active on social networks, and 383.4 million are connected to the web through their mobile devices.


Data from the US Department of Commerce show that e-commerce has become increasingly popular over the past decade, as evidenced by the growth in its sales figures. In 2022, total US e-commerce sales reached a record high of $1.03 trillion, equivalent to approximately 950 billion euros, with an annual growth rate of 7.44%.



From 2012 to 2022, annual e-commerce sales in the United States increased fivefold, an average annual growth rate of 16.4%. The largest increase was in 2020, when total sales increased by 42.4%.


According to Digital 2023, 268.2 million Americans shopped online in 2022, with an average annual spending of $3,374 (€3,114) per person. 46.8% of online shopping orders came from mobile phones.

  2. Coupons and discounts (47.4%)

  3. Simple return policy (38.7%)

  4. Reviews from other buyers (37.3%)

  5. Simple and fast ordering experience (33.4%)

  6. Same-day delivery (31.6%)


Regarding payment methods for online buyers in the US, it was observed that 51% use credit or debit cards, while 30% use digital wallets. The rest are divided into other payment methods (9%), bank transfers (8%), and cash payments (2%).


Same-day delivery is gaining popularity in the US due to the increasing penetration of online channels. The use of same-day delivery in the US increased between 2020 and 2021. According to a survey, 24% of US online shoppers chose same-day delivery for pure-play purchases in 2020. As of February 2021, this percentage has risen to 36%.


It is learned that the leaders in the field of e-commerce logistics in the United States include Amazon, FedEx, DHL, UPS, XPO Logistics, DB Schenker and SF Express. In particular, FedEx and DHL have significantly strengthened their infrastructure dedicated to e-commerce in recent years and have formed multiple alliances with local small express delivery companies, aiming to cover most of the United States in terms of delivery. USPS also conducts business around online channel sales and launches services such as USPS Connect to meet the needs of small sellers.
