Canadian online shopping demand heats up in July! Multiple categories perform strongly!

It is learned that according to data from Mastercard SpendingPulse, Canada's total retail sales (excluding automobiles) in July this year increased by 1% compared with the same period in 2021, and increased by 15.4% compared with the same period in 2019. This means that although the current inflation level is high, Canadian consumers' spending levels remain stable.

Data shows that compared with the same period in 2021, Canada's e-commerce sales in July this year increased by 5.4% year-on-year, and increased by 74.7% compared with the same period in 2019. The increase in promotional activities has prompted people to shop online, which in turn has driven e-commerce growth. In addition, Canada's in-store sales also increased in July, up 0.1% from the same period last year and 7.7% from the same period in 2019.

"While consumer spending has accelerated slightly, it is still impacted by high inflation," said Steve Sadove, senior advisor at Mastercard. "As retailers grapple with excess inventory and supply chain constraints, consumers are focusing on essentials, and promotions are likely to become an important strategy to drive e-commerce growth."

It is learned that, by category, in July, spending on fuel and restaurants was very strong as Canadians were on vacation, going out and traveling more.

With the increase in outings, consumers' demand for clothing is also high, with spending on this category increasing by 17.1% year-on-year. The second largest category is home improvement, with spending increasing by 9.0% year-on-year. Jewelry accessories ranked third, with spending increasing by 7.7% year-on-year. In addition, Canadians also increased their spending on furniture, home furnishings, and electronic products.
