It is learned that foreign media reported that FedEx has leased three freighters and is selling empty container sailing space to shippers to launch a "congestion bypass service." These freighters will not sail to crowded ports such as Los Angeles/Long Beach, but to the Port of Hueneme in Ventura County, less than 100 miles north of Los Angeles. The Port of Hueneme, which lists automobiles and fresh agricultural products as its largest imported commodities, saw a 13% year-on-year increase in imports in November. According to FedEx, this alternative route will save shippers 20 days in shipping time from China to the United States compared to going through Los Angeles/Long Beach. Hueneme is closer to Southern California's logistics network, but the port is not large enough to be a long-term alternative. Port authorities must reach an agreement with the Navy to accommodate the increase in container volume, and in November, Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) and the port's owner, the Port of Oxnard, launched an agreement to use Navy resources to help reduce congestion at the Los Angeles County port. This means that FedEx-leased freighters will dock at the U.S. Navy terminal. FedEx announced late last year that it would import empty containers from China for use in FedEx freight in the United States, hoping to sell the space in these empty containers to deal with congestion in Los Angeles/Long Beach. Christina Meek, a spokeswoman for FedEx Logistics, said that these empty containers from China's Humen Port will eventually be used in FedEx's multimodal network in Southern California. The first of three chartered ships carrying 53-foot containers will arrive at the Port of Hueneme, California, in late January. The containers are loaded with electronics, automotive materials, clothing and department store merchandise. The arriving ships can accommodate 300 53-foot containers per voyage.
