86% of U.S. holiday shoppers plan to shop online, with free shipping being the main attraction


It is learned that a few days ago, according to foreign media reports, according to SmartCommerce's "2024 Holiday Gathering and Shopping Report", US consumers' online shopping intentions during the holiday season continued to rise . 86% of holiday shoppers plan to buy some gifts online this year, while 14% plan to do all shopping in physical stores, slightly lower than last year's 16%.


The survey shows that 51% of consumers will choose to shop in a combination of online and offline methods, which has become one of the main trends this year. At the same time, 30% of consumers plan to buy entirely online and have their products delivered directly to their homes. Another 5% of consumers said they would choose to order online and pick up the goods in the store. In contrast, young consumers are more inclined to shop online, with only 4% of Generation Z and 8% of millennials choosing to shop only in physical stores, while the proportion of baby boomers is 20%.


During Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday, consumers are more inclined to shop online. 47% of consumers plan to shop online during this period, while only 20% plan to go to physical stores. On Thanksgiving Day, 32% of consumers said they would shop online, while only 11% planned to go to physical stores. These data show that online platforms are still the first choice for consumers during the big promotion.


When asked where they plan to shop, consumers most often mention Amazon (79%), followed by Walmart (69%) and Target (42%). 22% of consumers choose dollar stores, and 17% choose grocery stores and Costco. When choosing gifts to buy, free shipping (76%), discounts (72%) and buy one get one free (41%) are the most popular choices for consumers.


Consumers of different ages also show different preferences in gift giving. Young consumers (18-26 years old) have the most diverse gift giving methods, preferring experiential, economical and emotional gifts (33% each). Practical gifts dominate among people aged 27-43 (53%), while economical gifts become more and more popular with age, accounting for 41% of people aged 60 and above.
