Amazon announced on Thursday that it will pay 100% of college tuition for its 750,000 U.S. employees. The company said it will invest $1.2 billion in the program, and employees who stay at Amazon will also receive year-end bonuses.
It is reported that starting from January next year, Amazon will pay for college tuition and textbooks for operational employees who have been employed for more than 90 days. In addition, it will also provide high school diploma courses and general education certificates for employees. The company plans to expand on-the-job vocational training to 300,000 people.
Job openings hit a record high of 10.9 million in July, according to the U.S. Labor Department.
As the job market becomes increasingly competitive, Amazon is stepping up incentives to attract talent. Previously, Amazon offered new employees a signing bonus of up to $1,000.
Competitors including Walmart and Target have also beefed up their employee education benefits in recent months. Last month, Target announced it would offer free undergraduate degrees to 340,000 employees at its U.S. stores. Meanwhile, Walmart said it would pay 100% of college tuition and book costs for Walmart and Sam's Club employees.
